Frequently Asked Questions

What is an electronic cigarette and how does it work?

An electronic cigarette (aka personal vaporizer) is a device that imitates a traditional tobacco cigarette and delivers all the pleasures of smoking, without all the problems . It is composed of 3 parts; a battery, an atomizer, and a cartridge.

The electronic cigarette works in the following way: the user inhales on the electronic cigarette; this causes an air flow sensor to signal to the built-in microprocessor, that in turn activates the atomizer. The atomizer converts the liquid nicotine in the cartridge into a vapour (by atomization), which is digested by the user. Simultaneously, a water based vapour is released from the propylene glycol by the atomizer to resemble ‘smoke’. This ‘smoke’ has no risk to its user or persons around them.

What is in the cartridge and the vapour you inhale?

The base liquid of a cartridge is made up of three main ingredients: liquid nicotine, tobacco extract flavourings, and propylene glycol. The liquid contains no harmful chemicals, unlike a typical tobacco based cigarette. When heated, the liquid produces a vapour which is smoke-like in appearance, but which is actually only a water-based vapour.

The benefits are:

** No smoke, only vapour.
** No passive smoking.
** No tar.
** No carbon monoxide.
** No cancer causing chemicals.
** No unpleasant or lingering odours.

** Legal to use in non-smoking areas (subject to manager’s permission)

Cartridges come in a variety of flavours: traditional tobacco, Marlboro, and mint, and each flavour comes in five different strengths Xtra High (24mg), High (18mg Nicotine), Medium (14mg Nicotine), Low (11mg Nicotine), None (0mg Nicotine).

How long does a standard cartridge last?

We have found from our own personal experience is that a cartridge will last the equivalent of 3-5 cigarettes.

Can I smoke electronic cigarettes anywhere and everywhere?

Electronic cigarettes do NOT fall under any tobacco smoking ban. Some places are more accepting than others. Many bars, restaurants, theatres, etc… are already allowing their patrons to use these devices. HOWEVER, this is at the determination and approval of the actual business establishment.

The Law introduced in the United Kingdom in the Health Act 2006, banned the use of tobacco based cigarettes in public places.
The Act was introduced in response to where tobacco based cigarettes kills over 100,000 people each year in the UK, as lit tobacco produces tar, carcinogens, carbon monoxide and up to 400 other toxic substances.

In Chapter 28 that incorporates the Smoking ban, the definition of smoking is stated as: smoking refers to smoking tobacco or anything which contains tobacco, or smoking any other substance, and smoking includes being in possession of lit tobacco or of anything lit which contains tobacco, or being in possession of any other lit substance in a form in which it could be smoked.

The user of an electronic cigarette device is excluded from this Act as the device contains no tobacco; it is not ignited, and produces no smoke from burning substances.

The electronic cigarette can be used in any location and within any premises that introduced a ban on tobacco based cigarettes with the introduction into Law of the Health Act 2006.
